childlife.ca e-news #59: Mentoring & Coaching: 1:1 Professional Development

Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen and a push in the right direction. — John C. Crosby

Are you looking for a powerful tool to help your staff reflect, reconsider and revitalize their practices that align with the How Does Learning Happen?

Are you seeking new ways to support your teachers in implementing best practices with children and their programming?

Wondering how to extend your professional development efforts beyond one-time workshops?

Mentoring & Coaching

One to One Mentoring is an effective tool to support your centre in providing the highest quality learning experiences for children in the community. Mentoring is a supportive and responsive professional relationship that is intended to increase a teacher’s professional effectiveness in the classroom.

How it Works!

The format is to observe the teachers within the classroom environment; their direct interactions with the children; peruse the general programming and review the team environment. The How Does Learning Happen? document and a modified ECERS: Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale is used as a general outline to shape the mentoring sessions.

Following the observations, each teacher will have the opportunity for a 1:1 mentoring – coaching session. The focus is on discussing insights into the child behaviour and development; programming and/environmental impacts and ways to extend learning with program changes and/or with supportive guidance strategies.

The staff feel encouraged and empowered! Changes in the classroom are immediate!
