“Sometimes in the winds of change we find our true direction.” —An Unknown Author

Finally, it seems we have found our true direction in the Early Childhood field. We have an amazing treasure in the two Government of Ontario documents: How Does Learning Happen and Think, Feel and Act.

Through exceptional research and documentation on how children learn, grow and flourish, we as educators can begin to embrace what we have always known is important to set the stage for learning: a sense of belonging, feeling loved, cared for and appreciated; a place to explore freely and teachers who positively support and guide children in their learning journey.

“Belonging, Well-Being, Engagement, and Expression are the four foundational conditions that are important for children to grow and flourish. A focus on these foundations throughout all aspects of early years programs ensures optimal learning and healthy development.” —Excerpted from How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years, Government of Ontario

High-quality early childhood programs have learned the art of establishing positive, responsive relationships with children and guiding behaviour supportively.

Interestingly, behaviour management theories often reduce guidance strategies to ineffective consequences and needless power struggles.

“Learning never exhausts the mind” —Leonardo Da Vinci

Childlife is excited to announce we have developed a training series for ECE’s that incorporates the Foundations for Learning from the How Does Learning Happen? document.
The focus is to take ECE’s beyond the “old behaviour management” theories and into the practical side of how to implement the four foundations with strategies that help support, teach and coach children in learning.

“Enthusiasm is excitement with inspiration, motivation, and a pinch of creativity.” —Bo Bennett

I don’t know about you, but I am very excited about the possibilities of what we can bring to our classrooms and more importantly the children we serve!

“By learning you will teach; by teaching you will learn.” —Latin Proverb
