Childlife.ca e-news#20: Follow the Leader

Leader: A person who leads; a person followed by others.

As leaders in our classrooms and homes, we have an awesome privilege to guide our children to become who they were meant to be.

We all yearn for authentic interactions, ones where people notice us, want to know about us, are interested and desire a personal relationship with us.

And so it is with children: They are so open, eager and yet vulnerable. We can lift them up, build them up, cheer them up or do the opposite…

As they manoeuvre in and around our classrooms and homes; as they circle around us engaging our attention, they are constantly seeking their identity:

WHO AM I?
WHAT AM I GOOD AT?
WHAT DO I LIKE TO DO?
HOW DO I LEARN?

I think the best gifts we could possibly give to the children in our lives are to:

WATCH
LISTEN,
REFLECT and
AFFIRM

When we take the time to play with them,
Watch how they put together some legos, or
Enjoy their discovery of an ant crawling on the floor, or
Appreciate how they determinedly stick at a puzzle until completed,

We infuse in them the discovery of self.

When we take the time to reflect on what we see and impart to them the true-ness of their being:

On who they are,
What they can do,
What they like to do and
How they go about learning …

We influence them deeply, profoundly and ultimately inspire them to be who they were meant to be…

“Few happinesses equal the joy of finding a heart that understands.” Victor Robinsoll (slightly adapted)

I am proud to know so many great leaders!
