P.A.C.E.: Positive Attitude Changes Everything!

We know that children (and adults) require attention!

Children learn very early on in their development how to gain an adult’s attention — positively or negatively.

However, they are not aware of what is “positive” or “negative” behaviours. Rather, children are shaped by our responses to their behaviour.

So sometimes, inadvertently, WE are causing and shaping “negative” behaviour to occur and continue. Who knew?!

Our attitude and interpretation of behaviour will direct our intervention efforts.
In our Mastering the Art of Child Behaviour workshops, parents and teachers are asked, “What behaviours are most challenging?”

Generally, they are often described in “judgemental” terminology such as, “He knows better.” “She is just being ‘naughty’,” “Stubborn”, “Disobedient”.

When we “label” behaviour in “negative” ways we are missing the key element to changing behaviour: understanding why and what the child is trying to communicate through their behaviour.

If we believe they are doing something to just bug us, then we will work harder at trying to stamp out the behaviour.

This often leads to using ineffective, punitive methods which create a “discouragement” cycle for the child and that is the last thing we want or intend to do.

Keeping up the P.A.C.E.

Behaviour is the language of children.

It is our job to decode the language so we make sense to the child so that the child can make sense of their world and start to respond more positively.

You will know when your methods are working when

  1. Your focus is on helping a child to feel a sense of connection, belonging and getting it right
  2. It is kind, firm and respectful
  3. It has the long-term view in mind and considers how and what the child may be thinking, feeling and communicating
  4. The intent is to help a child learn the skill of using words, waiting, taking a turn, getting along, self control…

Behaviour is complex and with a Positive Attitude we can find the right strategies that Change Everything.
