Childlife.ca e-news #35: Fostering Gifts!

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a good teacher. —Temple Grandin

This summer I had the opportunity to meet up with some of the most dedicated, caring, and loving parents and teachers here in TO and in the USA.

What struck me about all of them was their dedication to their vocation and their insights into the children’s interests and gifts. One friend/parent/teacher has fostered all three of her children to try new, different, challenging and unique things. And now, in their 20s, each has embraced life and seem well on their way to being who they were meant to be!

Isn’t that something we all want for all our children?

4 Ways to Foster Gifts

LOOK to see what holds a child’s attention — trains, legos, drama, crayons, dance, paint, writing, water, playdough, music, singing, puzzles… All are potential gifts and talents waiting to be realized!

OFFER a variety of activities that stimulate all 5 senses daily! Let them EXPLORE, investigate, try, fail, discover! Even if little ones use their hands to explore paint instead of brushes, encourage it! If they like to make noise/sing/dance – applaud, cheer on!

COMMENT and bring their awareness to it: “Wow you must really enjoy …. you spent such a long time with that. It looks like it made you feel good inside.”

SUPPORT their interests daily by offering them lots of opportunities to expand, develop and enjoy their gifts. One day they will thank you!

When this is a central theme to our teaching in the classroom and parenting at home, you can be sure of the impact and know you are fostering who they were meant to be!

If you hear a voice within you say, ‘you can’t paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. —Vincent Van Gogh
